Previously…
– As he arrived for Thanksgiving dinner at Paula’s, Spencer overheard a conversation between Natalie and Jason, during which Natalie tried to convince Jason to join forces with her in the upcoming custody suit over Peter.
– Tim felt awkward about regarding Peter as his grandson as he watched his brother, Jason, grieve the loss of Peter as his son.
– After dinner, Jason went upstairs to get a sleeping Peter and was startled to find that the boy wasn’t there.
Jason Fisher’s frantic footsteps rumble on the staircase of his mother’s home as he rejoins the family Thanksgiving celebration. His sister and her husband, hearing the noise, rush in from the dining room.
“Where’s Peter?” Jason asks in a panic.
Sarah regards him with confusion. “What are you talking about? Didn’t you put him upstairs to sleep in Billy’s room?”
“He isn’t there.” Jason scans the room in terror and then goes into the dining room, where he also sees no sign of the boy. “Where is he? Where is Peter?!”
Paula Fisher hurries over to her youngest son as the other family members and friends who have gathered for the holiday freeze over their cups of coffee and the remains of their pumpkin pie.
“He isn’t upstairs?” she asks with alarm.
Jason shakes his head. “No. Did anyone see him get up? Maybe he wandered out of the room…”
“I haven’t seen him,” Tim says, his voice tense with worry. “I’ll check the backyard.”
Tim bolts for the kitchen and the back entrance.
Jason goes back into the living room and toward his young daughter, who has her winter coat half-on.
“Where’s Peter?” Sophie asks.
“That’s what we’re trying to figure out,” he says as calmly as he can manage. “Did you and Billy see him come down the stairs?”
“No,” Sophie says, with an uncharacteristic note of fear.
“We’re going to find him,” Jason reassures her.
Sarah is already halfway up the stairs. “Maybe he’s hiding somewhere. We’ll look.”
Matt follows her quickly.
“Wait,” Samantha Fisher says, appearing in the doorway that connects the living and dining rooms. “Where’s Spencer?”
Jason swivels his head around, but he already knows that he is not going to see his nephew anywhere. In that moment, it all begins to make sense.

Spencer Ragan slips the plastic key card into the slot on the door and waits anxiously for the green light to give him the go-ahead. Thankfully, it does, and he shoves the door open. With his other hand, he gently pulls the toddler accompanying him into the room. Spencer wastes no time closing the door and setting the deadbolt in place.
“See? Not so bad,” he says to Peter, who is staring around the room with what is either wonder or confusion. The motel room isn’t exactly what Spencer would call luxurious, or even pleasant, but it will do for the time being — especially given how quickly he had to figure out a plan. After taking a sleeping Peter from Billy’s bedroom, he crept down the stairs, went down the narrow side hallway, and snuck out the French doors in the den. He then buckled Peter into the carseat that he only installed for the sake of appearances and drove several miles away, where he used an ATM and then left his BMW in the parking lot before calling a cab and having it take them in the opposite direction. He hopes the diversion will at least buy them several hours as he figure out his next move.
“Where’s Mommy?” Peter asks as he stares up at the man whom he doesn’t even know is his father.
“I told you, we’ll see Mommy soon.” Referring to Natalie that way gives Spencer pause — the term doesn’t exactly roll off his tongue, and he hopes that Peter cannot sense his hesitation. “We’re just going to have a sleepover tonight.”
“Spender and Peter have a sleepover,” the toddler declares.
“Right.”
Peter walks over to the bed and then turns back. “I want Mommy.”
“You’ll see Mommy soon. We just have to be good tonight. Okay?”
Peter’s face screws up. “I want Mommy!”
“Shhh!” Spencer rushes over to him. Placing his hands on the little boy feels unnatural, but he does his best to comfort him with a palm on his back and the other holding his tiny hand. “We have to be quiet. It’s nighttime.”
The moment of peace that ensues is broken by the sudden, sharp ringing of Spencer’s cell phone. He immediately silences it, and only then does he look at the screen, where he sees his father’s name on the caller ID. Though his heart is thumping hard inside his chest, he lets the call play out silently and then go to voicemail, rather than abruptly sending it there. That will seem less suspicious. Maybe.
“Why don’t we watch something?” Spencer suggests as he lifts Peter onto the queen bed. He finds the remote and turns on the TV. “What do you want to watch?”
“Peppa Pig!”
“What’s Peppa Pig?” Spencer asks. He flips through the channels. The nightly news… a football game… a home-renovation show…
“It’s Peppa Pig!”
Spencer hands the boy the remote control to continue looking for something to watch. He watches Peter sitting there and tries to imagine what tomorrow will look like. All that mattered back at Paula’s house was asserting himself as Peter’s father. After the covert conversation that Natalie and Jason had, he knew that he had to do something to keep them from stabbing him in the back. He has always had the sense that the Fishers regarded him as some kind of conditional relative, someone they’d always keep at arm’s length just in case, and Jason’s willingness to conspire with Natalie only proves that. Spencer had no choice but to take matters into his own hands.
Suddenly the phone blares out a frantic cry. Spencer grabs it and sees the Amber Alert on the screen. Just as he expected, he sees the description of his own car and its license plate number show up.
“Dammit,” he mutters, though he should have known how quickly the Fishers would move, considering their closeness to the police commander.
“I want Mommy!” Peter shouts as he tosses the remote down on the bed.
“She’s coming,” Spencer tells him. “We just have to wait a little while.”
“Then I want Peppa Pig!”
Frazzled, Spencer quickly uses his phone to search for Peppa Pig and sees that he can stream it.
“Let me make one call and then we can watch it on here. Deal?”
Peter collapses dramatically onto the bed, arms spread out, but does not yell anything further, which greatly relieves Spencer.
He looks up information for Carroll County Correctional Institution, where his mother — rather, the woman who raised him — has been held for several years. But between the time change and the inability to reach prisoners at will, he has no idea how to get a hold of Loretta. He wasn’t even planning to involve her in this, like Natalie suggested to Jason, but now he has no choice. He needs help.
Spencer looks at Peter, lying on the bed as some infomercial plays out on the TV, and realizes how badly he could have screwed all this up. All because of one impulsive move.
Nervously, he pulls up the Facebook Messenger app and searches for a contact. He hesitates, knowing that he could ruin it all by doing this, but he cannot work out a different solution.
He places the voice call and waits for the perplexed answer. After letting out a sigh of relief that he actually got an answer at all, he speaks:
“This is important. I need your help.”

“What do you mean, he’s missing?!” Natalie Bishop shrieks as she sits up straight in bed.
“Spencer took him,” Jason’s voice says through her cell phone, which she has pressed to her face.
“You saw him do it?”
“No! But he’s gone, and he isn’t answering his phone, and Peter isn’t anywhere in the house.”
“Jason, I leave him with you for a few hours, and–”
“I’m sorry,” Jason says.
Natalie scrambles off the bed. She had just settled in with a glass of wine in her new apartment, thankful for a night off from parenting, when Jason’s call came in.
“Where are you now? I’m coming,” she says as she yanks clothing from a cardboard box.
“I’m driving around. Brent issued an Amber Alert for Spencer’s car, but I thought maybe I’d see them…”
“Have you gone to Spencer’s house yet?”
“Yeah, of course. There’s no sign of anyone there.”
Natalie tosses off her robe as she holds the phone between her ear and shoulder. “Where should I meet you?”
“My mom’s, I guess.”
“I swear to God, Jason, if anything happens to Peter…” She grunts as she struggles to step into a pair of leggings. “You are screwed in this custody case.”
“How about we worry about Peter right now?” he says over the crackling line.
“I am worrying about Peter right now. I’ll be at your mom’s as quickly as I can. Let me know if you hear anything.” Without waiting for a response, she ends the call and drops the phone to the carpeted floor so that she can pull on the leggings and find a sweatshirt. Her entire body is tight with fear as she imagines where her young son might be and what he is going through right now.

Spencer paces nervously over the cheap-looking, patterned carpet in the motel room. He glances occasionally over at the bed, where Peter is riveted to the iPhone, which is blessedly playing episodes of Peppa Pig and keeping him riveted while he munches on potato chips that Spencer grabbed from a vending machine.
When the knock on the door sounds, Peter looks up expectantly.
“It’s okay,” Spencer tells him, hoping that it actually is. He peeks through the peephole in the door and then opens it up with a strange mixture of relief and fear.
“Here,” he says as he shoves a wad of cash into his visitor’s hand.
Elly Vanderbilt stares at him in confusion. “What is this?”
“A retainer. It’s 90-something dollars. Will that work for now? It’s all I have on me.”
“What the hell did you do that you needed me to–?” But she cuts herself off when she looks past him and sees Peter on the bed, half-watching the show on the phone.
“Oh my god,” Elly says, snapping back toward Spencer with wide eyes. “You didn’t.”
“Natalie and Jason were plotting to cut me out,” he says in a coarse whisper. “I thought fast, and–”
“And you kidnapped a child you don’t have any custodial rights to?”
“He’s my son.”
“It’s still kidnapping,” Elly says. “Why in the hell would you drag me into this? I have to report this, Spencer.”
She digs in her purse for her phone, but he grabs her hands to stop her.
“Please,” he says, forcing the cash into her palm. “I don’t want to hurt Peter. I don’t want to keep him from Natalie entirely. But I panicked, and now I’m in this situation, and I need a lawyer…”
“What about the lawyer you hired?” she asks with irritation.
“It’s Thanksgiving. I don’t have any way of reaching him. I thought you would…” He exhales loudly and tries to focus, even as the room seems to be spinning around him. “You grew up without knowing you were adopted or who your real parents were. Just like me. Right?”
He sees her flinch, even as she retorts, “It’s a little different.”
“Still. You were angry at your parents for not letting you know that you weren’t theirs biologically, weren’t you? And it really screwed you up for a while when you found out Danielle and Jimmy were your parents and you had to figure out a way to have relationships with them?”
“Yeah, but…” Elly lets out a frustrated sigh. “Spencer, this is nuts. You’re hiding out in some shady motel with a kid you stole.”
“I didn’t steal him! He should’ve been with me all along, if Natalie hadn’t lied and switched tests and done God knows what else. All I want is a chance to be a part of my son’s life, and now because of one stupid move, I might’ve ruined that forever.”
“Yeah. You might have.”
“That’s why I need your help,” he says. “As an attorney, I need your advice. How do I salvage this? What’s my best chance of not being cut off from Peter forever?”

Jason parks his car curbside and hurries back up the stairs to his mother’s house. Inside, he can see the lights still on and bodies still milling around, despite the late hour. He uses his key to let himself in and finds most of his family in the living room.
“Did you find anything?” Paula asks as she moves toward him.
“No. I…” Jason runs a hand over his bleary eyes. “I went to Spencer’s house, I drove around downtown… Nothing.”
“I’m trying to figure out if we can trace Spencer’s cell phone,” Sarah announces as she looks up from her own phone, on which she has been typing insistently. “It doesn’t help that it’s so late, but I’m working on it.”
“Thanks,” Jason tells her.
Tim uneasily approaches his brother. “You talked to Natalie, right? I called Diane and told her to let us know if she for some reason hears anything. And Samantha and Bree are trying, too.”
“Natalie’s on her way over,” Jason says. “She’s as terrified as I am.”
Tim nods with understanding. “Peter’s going to be fine. We need to have faith in that.”
“Faith?” Jason’s eyes flash bolts of anger at Tim. “Your lunatic son ran off with a toddler. I don’t need faith — I need someone to find them!”
“The police are looking,” Tim says, “and–”
“And what? Spencer has always been a loose cannon. He isn’t equipped to be a parent — not by a long shot. When he’s found, you can be damn sure he isn’t going to get anywhere near Peter again.”
“Jason, I know you’re worried. We all are.” Tim reaches his hands out to his brother. “But keeping Peter from his father–”
“I am his father!” Jason bellows. “I have been his father since the moment he was born, regardless of what any DNA test says. All this does is prove that Spencer isn’t fit to take care of a child.”
Tim sucks in a breath and searches carefully for his next words.
“Let’s just focus on finding them right now,” he says at last.
“That is what I’m focused on. But if you think for a second that Spencer is getting away with this, you’ve got another thing coming,” Jason says, as his index finger jabs in his brother’s direction. “We all made a mistake trusting someone who was raised by those maniacs Loretta and Philip. But no more.”
Before Tim can respond, Jason storms off in the direction of the kitchen. Tim looks around, catching the sympathetic eyes of his sisters and several other guests, as Paula goes chasing after Jason.

In the motel room, Elly folds her arms and lets out a heavy sigh. Spencer, who has been standing nearby waiting for her verdict, pops to attention.
“Are you going to help me?” he asks.
She levels a serious stare at him.
“You have gotten yourself into a giant mess,” she says gravely. “But what’s important here is that little boy.”
“I know that.”
After another moment’s hesitation, she drops her arms. “I have an idea. Give me your phone.”
“What? Why?”
“Because I think I know how to fix this,” Elly says. “But you have to be willing to play ball.”
“As long as it lets me be a part of Peter’s life.”
“Then use this so he can watch his show, and give me yours,” she says as she hands him her iPhone. “And pray that this works.”

Two Episodes in one week!!! Sweet!!!
A lot of emotion took place within this episode. I knew Spencer was behind Peter’s kidnapping but with his Aunt a former cop and PI he might not be able to hide forever. Yet he is still in touched with his old bratty selfish personality when he was getting impatient with his son. I didn’t expect him to call Elly of people and it seem they’re willing to work something out regarding retaining custody of Peter.
Jason wasn’t having much of Tim’s BS about Spencer. It seems like he is still dealing with everything about not being Peter’s father.
I’m going to need Sophie to say ” Remember when Grandma Helen kidnapped me daddy?” LMAO

Thanks for posting, Bre! Yeah, I had this one ready to go sooner than expected and decided to just post it because it’s still Thanksgiving in the story and I want to keep things moving.
Spencer is still the same person he’s always been, albeit older and with more experience. When he gets impulsive, he lashes out. He did not think this one through past his anger at Natalie and Jason possibly conspiring. I always knew Elly was going to get folded into this, which makes her return to King’s Bay tied in with a bunch of stuff. This will keep spiraling and expanding as the weeks go by.
The Jason/Tim conflict was fun to write. We rarely see the Fishers (save Sarah and Molly) go at each other, so this is an interesting dynamic. — especially because everyone knows that all Tim is doing is *not* turning on his son. This will continue to play out, too.
Sophie’s kidnapping comes up soon! I’ve had that in my head forever, hahahaha.

This was action packed with the “kidnapping” of Peter; it wasn’t a shock that Spencer took him and his rationale made complete sense but it was still a dumb move. I thought his interactions with the kid ran true as well, like having no idea what Peppa Pig is etc. Elly getting involved was a clever use of her with her history.
I think my fav moment was Jason lashing out at Tim about how crazy Spencer is. Tim was smart to just let him rant but you know it had to hurt him all the same.
Can’t wait to see what happens next!

Thanks, Dallas! As I said to Bre, I luckily managed to get this one done early, and since it was continuing Thanksgiving, it felt right to just get it out there.
Writing Spencer with Peter was interesting, because until now, being a father has kind of been this conceptual thing to him. He actually had to face what that’s like, and he freaked out, which brought him back to reality even more. The thought to include Elly in this was a big part of my decision to bring her back; it just made her finally seem compelling because it crosses so many different lines.
That Jason/Tim confrontation was SO satisfying to write. We really haven’t seen those guys have true conflict in 21 years, and it was a huge part of why I decided to do this story. Neither viewpoint is wrong, either. Jason was ranting, but he wasn’t off-point. And Tim kind of knew Jason was lashing out, but he’s not going to take that forever, either.
