– Rosie decided to tail one of Jesse’s contacts, whom she is sure is involved in Diego Barrera’s drug ring.

billsonthepier

The dining room of Bill’s on the Pier has been transformed for the wedding that is set to take place today. With the tables moved to one side of the large room and adorned with crisp white tablecloths, there is now space for two blocks of chairs to provide seating and create an aisle for the ceremony. Guests mingle throughout the restaurant, enjoying glasses of wine or champagne before the wedding begins.

“You have no idea how good it is to see you,” Danielle Taylor says as she gives her daughter a final squeeze and then takes a step back from their embrace. “You really are all grown-up.”

Elly Vanderbilt blushes. “I don’t know about that.”

“You’re a lawyer. That’s incredible.”

Elly smiles back at the woman whom she knew as her godmother for so many years before learning the truth about her lineage. Danielle looks radiant but breezy in a blue calico-print dress with bell sleeves.

“I’m not the one with a hit song on the radio,” Elly says. “You have no idea how many people have played that song around me without realizing my mom is singing the chorus.”

Danielle shrugs. “It’s really just a sample.”

“It’s your voice! From your song! If there’s one thing I learned during law school, it’s that there’s no point being overly humble. It’ll just get you stepped all over.”

“Sounds like a dog-eat-dog world,” Danielle says. Again she surveys Elly, unable to believe what a grown woman she now is. Her red hair stands out against the rich, royal purple of her dress. “I can’t tell you how great it is to have you in town.”

“I wouldn’t have missed this for the world.” Elly looks around, at the guests chattering and swirling around the room. “Jimmy seems really happy.”

“He is. I’m thrilled he found Kathleen.”

“How about you?” Elly asks in a softer tone. “Are you good?”

danielle-2017Danielle’s expression hardens. “If you’re asking if I’ve stayed sober–”

“I’m not. I trust you on that. I know how serious you are about your recovery.” Elly takes her mother’s hand to emphasize her point. “But how are you doing? You’re happy?”

“I am,” Danielle says without hesitation. “Recommitting to my music has made a world of difference. I can’t believe I let that fall by the wayside for so long.”

“I’m glad you found it again. I’m sorry I haven’t been back since Ryan’s funeral.”

“I can only imagine how busy law school was. I’m very proud of you.”

“Still… I want you to know I’m always there for you.”

“Thank you. But I already knew that. You’ve been so good about checking in by phone and text.”

Elly goes quiet for several seconds, and her brown eyes dart around the restaurant.

“I try, but it isn’t the same,” she says quietly. “I’m sorry you had to go through what you did after Ryan was killed.”

As she fights back the vivid imagery of her relapse, Danielle squeezes her daughter’s hand. “But I got through it. It had to be me that got me through it.”

Elly lets out a sigh. “If I’d known had bad things had gotten, I would’ve been here in a heartbeat. But I’m so happy that you found your strength and got healthy. You’re an inspiration.”

“I don’t know about that,” Danielle says, “but I’m a person who knows what’s important in life and tries to keep her sights set on that.”

“And on a DJ Khaled song.”

“And that.” Danielle laughs. “I’m just so happy you’re here.” Overcome with joy, she hugs Elly again.

—–

Across the restaurant, Tim Fisher shoves one hand in the pocket of his suit pants while holding a glass of champagne in the other.

“It was so abrupt,” he is telling his ex-wife and Brent Taylor, “like she decided on a whim to turn her entire life upside-down.”

“Maybe her mother’s condition is worse than she wanted to let on,” Claire offers in an attempt to be helpful.

“That could be,” Tim admits. “I wish I’d had some indication, or…” He trails off, consumed by thoughts of Sonja and their bizarre encounter earlier.

“It does seem strange,” Claire says. “One minute, she’s pleading with you for another chance, and the next, she’s high-tailing it out of town.”

Brent claps a hand on his former brother-in-law’s shoulder. “Sorry about this, Tim. I know you and Sonja were starting to get more serious.”

Tim nods and then glances around the room, as if the answer might be lurking somewhere nearby.

“It sounds like you did everything that you could,” Claire says, “and that’s the only part you can control.”

“That’s very reasonable advice,” Tim says before taking a quick slug of the champagne. “Which is absolutely not what I’m in the mood to hear right now.”

“Sorry.” Claire laughs gently.

He watches the fizzing champagne in the glass for a moment and then adds, “Guess who I ran into after that when I stopped for a coffee? Natalie.”

Claire’s eyes widen. “Did she have…?”

Peter was with her, yeah.”

“At least she’s staying in town,” Claire says. “I’ve been worried she would take off with him.”

“If she does, Jason still has parental rights, since he’s on the birth certificate,” Brent chimes in. “That would be the stupidest thing she could do.”

“That doesn’t mean she won’t do something like,” Tim says gravely, “but it seems to be working for the time being. I just don’t want this to drag on forever.”

“We need to sit down with Jason and Spencer so that we can get everyone on the same page and present a united front,” Claire says, though her expression betrays her suspicion that this will be easier said than done. “None of us should lose any more time with that little boy than we already have.”

From a discreet distance, Rosie Jimenez watches the silver sedan that she has been tailing pull into the park’s main entrance. She slows her speed but continues past the entrance without turning, not wanting to alert her target that he is being followed. When she is a few hundred yards down the road, however, she makes a careful U-turn and doubles back through the falling rain.

She brings her car to a stop at the curb outside the parking lot, kills her lights, and waits. Though it is still daytime, the combination of the gloomy gray and the rain make visibility more difficult than it otherwise might be. Still, she is able to see her target, with his unkempt brown hair and thin mustache, step out of the sedan and walk toward the baseball diamond.

rosie-2017As she strains to observe, Rosie sees him walk toward the backstop. Someone else is already there, in a dark-colored hoodie. She picks up her binoculars in hopes of seeing the encounter more clearly, but they do little besides amplify the size of the figures. Still, their body language tells Rosie all that she needs to know; the quick, sly exchange of items from one hand to the other is exactly what she expected.

“Boom,” she says to herself as she sets down the binoculars. She attempts to snap a few photos with her photo, but between the distance and the weather, all she winds up with a set of blobs.

Her target returns to the silver sedan, starts it up, and pulls out of the lot. Rosie ducks down in her driver’s seat as he passes, though she is almost certain he has not taken note of her. Seconds later, she sits back up. The figure in the hoodie is still in the park, slowly walking over the grass.

She hadn’t planned on taking action today, but with no photos or physical evidence, this is little more than an informational errand. And she is tired of waiting. If she can pull this off, the D.A. will have a firm lead on Diego Barrera and Rosie will be in the clear.

Without wasting another second, she climbs out of the car and heads into the park.

322barngrill

When she steps in from the rain to pick up her takeout order, Diane Bishop is surprised to find 322 Bar & Grill much busier than she expected. She waits at the host’s stand as another party is seated and half-listens to the Journey song playing over the speakers until the host returns.

“How can I help you?” he asks.

“I’m picking up an order. The name is Diane.” She hands him her credit card, and he scurries off to retrieve her food.

She glances to her side reflexively when she hears the door creak open and feels the brief rush of cool air from outdoors — only to react with surprise when she sees her sister entering with her toddler son on her hip.

Diane crosses her arms as she sizes up the situation and evaluates how she should handle Natalie.

“Hi, Peter,” she says instead. “Here for a burger and a beer?”

“He’s going to have some French fries, if he’s as good as he’s been all day,” Natalie responds. She scans the nearby area and then asks, “Are you eating alone?”

“Just picking up an order for dinner. I have work to do.”

“We’ve been running around all day, so I thought I’d treat this little guy to a fun dinner.”

Diane watches as Natalie sets the wriggling toddler on the ground.

“That’s a good idea,” Diane says. “He seems happy.”

“He is happy, Diane.”

“No thanks to his mother.”

Natalie glares at her. “Could you not? We have a lot to work out, but all Peter needs to know is that he has plenty of family members who love him.”

“I’ll give you that much.”

“Besides, I had to get out of that hotel for a while,” Natalie says. “Mom and Dad can be a little stifling.”

A sardonic laugh rustles its way out of Diane’s throat. “A little?”

“You know what I mean. Hey–” Natalie makes a sudden move toward Peter, who has begun to pull someone’s umbrella out of the box by the door. “That isn’t yours. We don’t take other people’s things.”

She takes the boy’s hand and redirects him back to her side.

“I thought you’d be out of the hotel by now,” Diane says.

“So did I. We found a place. But things aren’t exactly moving at an urgent clip in that department. I’m waiting on Dad to transfer some money to me, and he has all this paperwork to sign. I don’t know why he hasn’t–”

“They’re going out of their way to help you.”

“I know that, Diane. It’s still annoying that he has to move at such a glacial pace, considering that I need to have all my ducks in a row–”

“Lay off him!” Diane snaps. “He’s doing everything he can.”

“If he were, he could sign the damn papers.”

“He has a lot on his plate!”

“What does that mean?”

Diane steams and holds back her next retort. Her conversation with their father, during which he admitted his illness to her, swirls through her mind.

“You aren’t exactly his biggest fan,” Natalie says. “Why are you defending him, anyway?”

—–

The tender sounds of a piano-and-violin version of Brian Crain’s Butterfly Waltz blanket the restaurant as the guests wait eagerly in their seats. The first member of the wedding party to emerge from the back and begin down the aisle is Elly, who holds a lavender bouquet that complements her purple dress.

“Great to have her in town, isn’t it?” Brent whispers as he leans over to his sister, who is seated beside him.

“You have no idea,” Danielle says happily.

jimmy-2017Elly walks right into the hug that Jimmy has waiting for her at the other end of the aisle, where he stands with two of his old friends and the minister. The men wear black suits with straight black ties, and Jimmy’s normally casual hair has been carefully slicked back. Elly takes her place beside her birth father as Kathleen’s two dear friends, Deb and Marcy, start down the aisle together in their own purple dresses.

As the music transitions into The Bridal Chorus, everyone rises, and Kathleen — her arm linked through Travis’s — appears at the back of the aisle. Joy emanates from her as she takes a long look around at those who have gathered to watch her dream come true.

“Ready?” Travis asks quietly.

She turns to him, unable to suppress her smile. “You betcha. Let’s do this.”

Together they walk toward the makeshift altar, where Kathleen’s friends and her groom await.

Tim shifts to his left so that he can speak quietly to Claire. “I never thought we’d be watching our son walk his other mother down the aisle, did you?”

She grins. “Not at all. But it kind of feels like everything has worked out in its own way, doesn’t it?”

Tim nods back to her.

When they come to the head of the aisle, Kathleen turns toward Travis.

“Thank you,” she tells him, “for letting me be part of your life.”

“Same. Congratulations.”

He gives her a final squeeze and steps to the side, where he will serve as her witness. Kathleen and Jimmy hold hands as the minister begins:

“We’ve gathered here today to celebrate the union of Kathleen Bundy and Jimmy Trask…”

When it comes time for the couple to speak their vows, Jimmy looks directly into his bride’s eyes.

“I never really saw myself as the marrying type,” he says. “But something changed when I met you, Kath. You make me want a different life — a more stable life. You make me see what’s really important, and you make me wanna be a better man. What I want now is to share my life with you, see what adventures we can get into. I love you, Kathleen.”

She beams at him, her eyes brimming with tears, as she recites her own vows.

“Jimmy, Jimmy… I still don’t know how going to a simple chili cookoff could’ve changed my life the way it did. When I was a little girl, I used to dream about becoming a princess and having some big, grand wedding. And then, you know, life happens, and you give up on the crazy dreams and you change your expectations. So most days, it still seems like magic that I met you. And I know it’s gonna feel like magic every single day that we get to spend together. I love you, too.”

kathleen-2017After they exchange rings and recite their “I do”s, a sense of excitement hangs in the air, growing steadily like a balloon being inflated, until the minister speaks the words for which everyone has been waiting:

“I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss–”

Before he finishes the statement, they are doing just that. Kathleen breaks the kiss only long enough to throw a fist into the air and declare, “Yee-haw!”

The crowd breaks out into applause and whistles as the newlyweds kiss again, reveling in their happiness.

—–

Diane evades her sister’s eye contact. When she looks down, however, she sees Peter standing there, distracted by a rust-colored leaf that has been dragged in from outside. As much as Diane might dislike her sister, she harbors no ill will toward Natalie’s kids. Bree and Peter are about to have their grandfather ripped away from them, in mere months or even weeks, with no time to prepare.

She hears Henry’s voice in her head once more:

“Treatments are only going to prolong this. I don’t want to feel that way. I don’t want all of you to remember me as this decaying shell of my former self.”

“I’m not defending him,” she says suddenly, uncrossing her arms. “But if you’re so unhappy with the pace at which he’s locking down an apartment for you, maybe you should, I don’t know, get a job?”

“I can’t just snap my fingers and make a job appear out of thin air,” Natalie says.

“No. It’s almost like you actually have to do some work and make an effort.”

“I didn’t come here to be criticized in front of my son. Where’s your damn food?”

Diane throws a cursory look toward the back of the restaurant. “Good question. I’m not exactly hanging out here for fun.”

Natalie sighs. “Listen. I’m having a really crappy time right now, obviously — and yes, I know it’s my fault — so all I’m asking is for you not to pile on. Okay?”

“Fine,” Diane says, realizing that if she were to try and be compassionate by giving her sister a heads-up about their father’s condition, Natalie would inevitably make it all about herself and go sobbing and screaming all over town.

Luckily, the host returns with a paper bag and Diane’s credit card.

“Thanks,” she quickly says as she signs the receipt and puts away her card. She takes the bag and looks to Natalie.

“Have a good dinner,” Diane tells both her sister and nephew, as she reaches down and rubs Peter’s shoulder. “I’ll see you.”

“See ya,” Natalie says, as Diane pushes open the door and braces for the rain that is about to hit her. She feels the weight of her father’s secret bearing down upon her, and she knows that if she doesn’t get out of here right now, she will be far too tempted to unburden herself.

—–

Raindrops bounce off the cars and the pavement as Rosie hurries through the parking lot toward the baseball diamond. She sees the  person in the hoodie — male, pretty young, she is certain just from the silhouette and posture — walking away in the opposite direction. She moves quickly over the grass, feeling the wet earth squish beneath her feet as she does.

“Hey there!” she calls out.

The figure stops, and she sees the head swivel back toward her, though between the distance and the weather, she can make out little more than a sliver of flesh behind the hood.

She picks up her pace, breaking into a jog.

“Can I ask you a question?” she shouts.

She sees the person jerk instinctively, as if preparing to flee, before turning more fully.

Jumpy, she thinks to herself. It proves absolutely nothing, yet it proves exactly what she suspects.

When she is only a few feet away, she reaches into her jacket and rests a hand over her badge.

“Hi,” she says. “I need to ask you a few questions.”

The figure, with lanky legs in black jeans, freezes, half-turned toward her.

“What’s up?” the surprisingly deep voice asks. It is shaky, unsteady. She gets the impression that he is about to bolt.

“King’s Bay PD,” she says as she whips out the badge. “I need you to put your hands in the air and face me.”

Nothing happens for a drawn-out moment. Rosie reaches for the service weapon hitched to her belt. Finally, however, the young man’s arms rise, exposing two hands, and he turns.

Rosie is about to continue when his face comes into view.

“Oh my god,” she says. “Christian?!”

  1. Hey, Michael
Decided to put my thoughts on this week’s episode down in the comment section.

I’m glad Kathleen and Jimmy got married. It seemed like there for a minute that perhaps Danielle was becoming interested in Jimmy again. I do like them together and they’re such a contrast to everybody else on the canvas when it comes to couples. Also I love the interaction with Danielle and Elly and how close they’re now compared to years ago when they were just godmother/goddaughter.

The scenes between Natalie and Diane seemed less combative then usual with the two of them our in a scene together. Maybe it was because Peter was with her sister or perhaps the thing with Henry is weighing her down ? I do agree it would be fun if Natalie got a job somewhere for now. I guess Conrad doesn’t pay alimony lol . I can also see why she didn’t want to tell Natalie who would probably make it all about herself and become more of a Drama Queen.

I’m wondering what exactly is Christian really doing ? It seem out of the blue in a intriguing way that Rosie discovered him.

    Good Episode

    Bre

    1. Thanks for taking the time to leave your thoughts, Bre!

Jimmy and Kathleen weren’t really ever a part of my plans, but pairing them seemed like a nice way to give each of them a life in the background of King’s Bay, and you’re right that they’re a contrast to most of the other couples. I’ve always liked when soaps have these tertiary characters who can pop in and out, and they both have grown biological kids on the canvas and will be running the new bar, so it adds some dimension to King’s Bay. Throwing them a wedding was a chance to have a fun backdrop for some other interactions — Elly reuniting with everyone, Tim talking to Claire & Brent, etc. And I find something sweet about Kathleen finding love at this stage of her life after thinking it would never happen.

Diane/Natalie always make an interesting combo. There’s no love lost, but they rarely go beyond the surface of their relationship — and yet, Diane never, ever holds it against Natalie’s kids, and vice-versa. This thing with Henry’s illness does have the potential to change their dynamic. I have some fun plans for Natalie to go to work, so I need to find the right place to make that happen.

We’ll learn a lot more about that surprise ending in the next episode. I always love soapy moments when two seemingly unrelated story threads tie together.

      Thanks again!

  2. Damn, I just knew that Rosie’s plan would lead to a new twist. Of course with Christian involved with that Jasmine, this seems logical. Surprising but logical. I was more expecting her to end up in danger, which could happen I suppose.

Oh Diane. I had hoped she’d tell Natalie what was up with Henry; she’s a classic soap vixen where she usually is her own worst enemy. I did love the line from Nat though asking her not to pile more on her already shitty circumstances, it felt very real.

And whaaaaaaat? A wedding that went off without a hitch? Maybe the biggest twist of all 😉
It was cute to see them tie the knot.

    Good episode!

    1. Thanks for taking the time to post, Dallas! This one wound up in the Spam/Trash, for some reason — luckily I’ve thought to start checking there a few times a week. ::eyeroll::

I’ve been waiting for the Rosie story to dovetail with the teen story. It kind of breathes fresh life into both scenarios and pulls in Brent even further, as well as Molly.

Diane’s in a tough position. In one way, she’s doing the honorable thing by respecting her father’s wishes, but she’s also basically lying to her sister (and mother) by not mentioning this very important information. If she and Natalie were closer, or close at all, it might be different, but there are so many walls up in that family as it is.

I thought about making Jimmy and Kathleen’s wedding more of a caper, but frankly, they’re such background characters that it felt like a nice time to just have a wedding go all right, and the wedding was able to serve as the backdrop for stuff I wanted or needed to do (namely Elly’s return, plus a lot of the interactions that played out in this episode and in Ep 946). So I let them off the hook this time. 😉

      Thanks again!
