– Tim was shocked when Sonja told him that she was leaving town and that their relationship was over. Unbeknownst to Tim, Loretta had blackmailed Sonja into doing so.
– Elly Vanderbilt returned to King’s Bay for Jimmy and Kathleen’s wedding.
– Rosie reviewed the files regarding the surveillance of Jesse, the busboy connected to her drug-dealing ex, and noticed something amiss about Jesse’s drop-offs at the soup kitchen.
The rain continues to fall steadily as Tim Fisher gets out of his car and hurries into Cassie’s Coffee House. Once inside, he swipes a hand over the jacket of his navy suit, though it is little use; he is just going to get wet again in mere minutes. He hopes that the suit will dry before he arrives at the wedding venue, though he is too dazed to care much. In fact, he has thought about missing Kathleen and Jimmy’s wedding entirely, but it seems so thoughtless and rude.
He gets in line and orders an Americano in hopes that the caffeine will perk him up. After what happened with Sonja, he needs it. He still cannot figure out why she had to end their relationship so decisively before leaving town. If she really is going to spend time with her ailing mother, Tim would have no problem waiting, or even traveling to Hawaii to support her. But Sonja made it clear that would not be happening.
He is waiting for his drink at the end of the bar when he sees Natalie Bishop enter the shop. At her side, holding onto her hand, is her toddler son. He wears a red coat and a pair of gray jogger-style pants with tiny Nike sneakers. Tim merely marvels at Peter for a long moment, still floored by the fact that he has a grandchild.
“Natalie,” he says, moving swiftly toward her as if she might turn and flee. Given the way she freezes, perhaps it is not such a crazy thought.
She holds up both hands. “I don’t want any trouble. I’m just getting a coffee for myself and a hot chocolate for Peter.”
“It’s okay. I just…” Tim stares at the little boy, who is busy gazing around the busy coffee shop. “Hi, Peter.”
Peter looks up, clearly overstimulated by this new setting and all the activity, from the bustling people to the noisy conversation and the din of music coming from the speakers.
“Uncle Tim,” he says in mushy syllables, as he glances at his mother with wonder, as if she might have just produced this relative out of thin air.
Tim pauses, uncertain how to proceed.
“We’ll have to work that one out,” he comments to Natalie as he sticks up for his hand for a high-five, which Peter eagerly gives him.
“Now is not the time,” Natalie tells him through gritted teeth.
“No, when a child is two years old is traditionally not when you have to reveal to him which relatives are which,” Tim says, letting every ounce of annoyance that he channel to seep into his words.
“Tim!” the barista’s voice shouts. He quickly grabs his drink from the end of the bar and sees that Natalie has gotten into line. He stands beside her and Peter.
“What are you all dressed up for?” Natalie asks him.
“Kathleen and Jimmy are getting married today. You know, Travis’s birth mother.”
She nods and then swivels her head from one side to the other and back again, surveying the space. “You aren’t picking up a coffee for your date? Where is she?”
“Not that it’s any of your business,” he replies, “but Sonja isn’t coming to the wedding.”
Natalie reacts with a surprising amount of alarm, or concern, or something in that vein that makes very little sense to Tim.
“What? Why not?”
“She’s leaving King’s Bay,” he says with a baffled shake of his head. “She says her mother is really sick, but…”
“Her mother is really sick, isn’t she?”
Now it is Tim’s turn to switch abruptly from sadness to confusion.
“Yes,” he says. “Why would you even ask that?”

Raindrops clatter across the roof and windshield of the parked car as Rosie Jimenez sits in the driver’s seat with her cell phone held to her face.
“Something’s definitely up,” she says into the phone. “I don’t know how they missed this.”
“It might not be anything,” Brent Taylor tells her over the line. He stands in the master bedroom of his house, pulling on a dark suit jacket over his dress shirt.
“But it could be something. Something big.”
Brent hesitates. “I still wonder if we should give Tam a heads-up.”
“Look,” Rosie says, doing what she can to mask her irritation at the prospect, “if you think that’s the way to go, do it. That’s why I filled you in — didn’t want you to think I was going rogue.”
He responds with a wry chuckle. “You aren’t not going rogue.”
“If you wanna see rogue, I’ll show you rogue.”
“I know that you want to take ownership of this situation,” Brent says in a calmer, more professional tone, “and if you crack this, no one’s going to be upset. But if anything goes wrong…”
“Nothing will go wrong. I know what I saw, Commander. Jesse took that food from the restaurant to the soup kitchen last night, and he helped this guy unload it all, and then the guy carried one box out to his own car. He brought the box inside with him when he got home. And he’s gone out, like, four times today.”
“Don’t let him notice you.”
“I know what I’m doing. He has no idea.” She reaches for the to-go coffee cup in the center console and brings it to her mouth for a hearty slug. “Every time he’s gone out, it’s been to some shopping center or busy place where he disappeared for a few minutes and then came back to the car. Something’s definitely up.”
Brent holds the phone between his shoulder and ear as he picks up his patterned tie from the bed.
“I’ll say it again,” he tells her. “Be careful. Take photos, keep notes, and let’s get it all into the file ASAP so we can make a move, if there’s a move to make.”
“There’s gonna be a move to make. I’m sure of it.”
“Good. Because then you’ll be in an even better position with the D.A., and we can have this over with once and for all.”
“Literally nothing that I want more.” Rosie is about to take another sip of her coffee when she sees the front door of the shabby apartment building open. A guy in his 20s, with shaggy brown hair and a not-too-successful attempt at a mustache, exits and moves quickly toward the nondescript silver sedan that she has been watching.
“He’s going somewhere,” she says. “Gotta go.”
“Get what documentation you can — and be careful.”
“Always.” She ends the call, sticks the phone back into the empty cup holder, and watches as her target starts his engine and pulls away from the building. After several seconds have elapsed, Rosie does the same.
A sign that reads “Closed For Private Event” hangs on the front door of Bill’s on the Pier. Inside the restaurant, the tables have been clustered on one side of the large dining room and covered with crisp white tablecloths. The other half of the room has been set up so that two blocks of chairs form a short aisle.
Travis Fisher, now wearing a black suit, is straightening one of the centerpieces, a floral arrangement highlighted by bold purple delphiniums, when Elly Vanderbilt comes walking toward the table.
“Everything looks great,” she says. “Don’t stress yourself out.”
He stops fiddling and gives her a half-shrug. “I just want everything to be as nice as it can be for Kathleen.”
“That’s sweet of you. It was really nice of your family to let them use this place as a venue.”
“It’s no big deal,” Travis says. “My grandma was more than happy to do it.”
Elly, now dressed in a royal purple dress with her red hair pinned up, smiles. “You seem like you’re doing well. I’m glad.”
“Thanks.” He nods awkwardly, feeling strangely self-conscious in front of his ex-girlfriend. “Congrats on passing the bar, by the way. I saw on Facebook.”
“Thanks. It’s all been such a blur.”
“But I know you must’ve worked really hard,” he says. “Be proud of that.”
“I am. It’s just, you know, an experience like law school teaches you a lot about the real world and what it takes to get by. That’s been an adjustment.”
“So, what? You’re like a new, edgy Elly now?” he asks with a laugh.
She touches a hand to her updo and chuckles. “What? You couldn’t tell from the hair?”
“I like the red. It’s… bold.”
“That was the idea. Where’s that girlfriend of yours?” She sees his hesitation. “You don’t feel weird about us meeting, do you?”
“It isn’t that.” He pauses and drums his fingers atop the white tablecloth. “We aren’t together anymore.”
“What? What happened?”
“It’s a really long, complicated story.”
“Well, if you ever want to talk…”
“Thanks, El.”
“Are you sure it’s over with her, though?” she asks. “Really sure?”
Travis shakes his head. “I don’t know what to think. She has this way of putting up a wall when she wants to. Just…” He passes a flat hand in front of his face. “No getting through that.”
She frowns. “I’m sorry. But if there’s any chance of salvaging it, you owe it to yourself to try. I think you already know that.”
“I really hate how well you can read me.”
“If only I were that good at reading myself,” she says.
“How about you?” Travis asks. “No one special enough to bring as a date to your dad’s wedding?”
Her lips part, but seconds pass before she answers. “Uh, no. Between graduation and the bar and… There was someone, but that’s over. Long over.”
“You don’t sound that convinced that it’s done for good,” he says with a raised eyebrow.
“Oh, believe me. It’s done.”
“Sorry to hear that.”
“It’s for the best — and that, I’m convinced of.” She threads her fingers together, holding both hands in front of her waist. “It really is good to see you doing well, though. I’m glad you found your passion. And if it’s meant to work out with this girl, then I hope it does. You deserve happiness, Travis.”
“After what I put you through,” he says with a sigh, “that means a lot to hear.”
“Why don’t we officially agree to let bygones be bygones? A lot has changed since I left for law school.”
“That works for me,” he says, unable to resist flashing her another smile.

“All ready to go?” Brent asks as he comes down the narrow staircase of his house, still straightening the knot in his tie.
“Someone looks dapper,” Claire Fisher says from beside the front door, where she has been giving herself a once-over in the wall mirror. She wears a black dress with cap sleeves and an angular neckline, with a simple silver pendant necklace as an accent.
Brent smiles as he approaches her. “Nothing compared to how you look.” When she shrugs, he adds, “You look beautiful. I mean it.”
“Well, thanks. I never feel too fancy when I have to get dressed at the hospital after a shift…”
“I’d say you did excellent work.”
He barely has the opportunity to plant a kiss on her before his teenage son enters with an open bag of tortilla chips in hand.
“Gross,” Caleb says, though the hint of a smirk in his voice is unmistakable.
“You’re gross,” Brent fires back over his shoulder.
“Are you doing anything tonight, Caleb?” Claire asks.
The teen pauses at the bottom of the stairs and finishes chomping on a handful of chips. “Probably going over to Dustin’s later.”
“Well, let me know.” Brent wags his cell phone in the air. “What about your brother?”
“I’m going to the movies with Bree,” Christian announces as he suddenly appears at the top of the stairs.
Brent looks at Claire with wonder. “How do they do that?”
“‘Cuz we’re ninjas,” Christian says. “It’s an 7:15 show, and the movie is, like, a little over two hours, so I’ll definitely be home by 10.”
“God, you are such a loser,” Caleb says.
Christian stops his foot on the landing. “Shut up. Why?”
“Who gives their parents an exact timeline of how they’ll be home an hour before curfew?”
“Enough,” Brent says loudly before Christian can toss a barb back at his twin. “Everyone in the house by 11. Text me your plans. Don’t kill each other. The end.”
“Have fun at the wedding,” Christian says cheerily.
The chip bag rustles as Caleb sticks his hand back inside it. “Later.”
Claire unfolds her umbrella as she and Brent step out into the rain.
“I’m definitely going to have to call him at 11:01 to find out where he is, huh?” Brent says.
“Without a doubt.”
Back inside the house, Caleb plops down on the family room sofa just as his phone jingles in his pocket. He sets the chip bag on the couch and takes out his phone.
Ugh, my parents, the text message from Jasmine reads.
He quickly types out and sends a response: what’s up?
Just making me go to dinner with them, she responds almost immediately.
Caleb puzzles over the implications of that for a moment and then texts her back: still on for later tho??
Jasmine’s answer — Yeah for sure! — comes within seconds, followed swiftly by another message: Can I ask you a favor before we meet up?
Shoot, he responds as he reaches for the chips again.

Natalie’s expression is inscrutable for a moment before she responds to Tim.
“All I mean,” she says, “is that Sonja made no secret to any of us that her mom is still back home and not doing well. So why would you doubt what she told you?”
“Because it was weird. For her to pack up and leave town in such a final way so quickly — it’s weird.”
“She’s leaving for good?”
He nods but quickly snaps out of his heartbreak enough to take the only tone of voice that he cares to offer her right now.
“What happens in my personal life is none of your business,” he says. “Not after what you did.”
Natalie folds her arms across the front of her army green coat and lets out a tiny huff. “I was trying to be polite. But I guess I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t.”
He rolls his eyes at her and then kneels down to address Peter. “Listen, little guy, I have to get going. But you have fun with your mom and enjoy your hot cocoa, okay?”
Peter bobs his head up and down excitedly.
“I’ll see you soon,” Tim tells the little boy. He has to force himself to stand back up; he feels as though he could stay like this forever, attempting to make up for all the time he has lost with his first grandchild.
“For Peter’s sake, I’m going to bite my tongue and not tell you most of the things that come to my mind when I see you,” he tells Natalie in a quieter volume. “But we need to sort this whole thing out soon, okay? I’ve been robbed of enough time as it is.”
“Excuse me for not thinking the perfect time is in the middle of a busy coffee shop while you’re all crazed over some nutjob nurse,” Natalie says.
“I didn’t suggest that, either. But this isn’t easy. And we’re all going to get together soon and deal with it. Got it?”
“Aye aye, captain.”
“I’m serious, Natalie. Don’t you try and pull anything. Besides Jason and Spencer–”
“I’ve gotten the message loud and clear,” she cuts him off. “All I want to do is make this as smooth as possible for my son.”
“Good.” He reaches down to ruffle Peter’s brown hair again. “See you soon, buddy.”
“Uncle Tim is leaving?” Peter asks no one in particular.
“I have to go,” Tim says, stung by the persistent urge to hear this child call him Grandpa. “But I’m going to see you very soon.”
Peter cranes his neck to look at his mother. “Can I still have a hot cocoa?”
“Of course you can,” she says, holding her son’s hand. “Bye, Tim.”
“Bye, Natalie,” he says with unconcealed irritation as he takes his coffee and heads back out into the rain.
Only once he is back in his car does Natalie allow her true emotions to tumble out, like a mighty river that has become too powerful for the feeble dam attempting to hold it back.
What the hell is Sonja up to now? she wonders as an uneasy rattle thrums in her gut. And is there any chance Loretta told her that I was the one who hired her?
“Next, please!” a barista calls out. With shaky hands and a panicked brain, Natalie leads Peter up to the counter with her.

Well, I know that Tim is still in the dark about the Sonja/Natalie connection but I am ready for that to come out. It would be great for him to realize that Loretta wasn’t actually paying/using Sonja, but Natalie was. It would be, almost, a final nail in Natalie’s coffin as well, since she would know what pretending to be Loretta would do the Fisher family considering the history there.
I did like the scene with Travis & Elly; they have come along way since their high school romance. It was nice that they were able to agree to put the past behind them. And, I’m loving the grown up Elly with a slight edge to her. It makes her a little more fun as a character.

One thing I love about the way this whole Sonja sub-story unfolded is that there are a ton of layers to peel back. It’s given Tim some meaty material and keeps generating new little side things to play. I’m going to post a behind-the-scenes piece shortly explaining some of what has gone into my thinking about Sonja and letting the secret linger (for now), because I rarely leave things dangling like this.
Glad you liked Travis/Elly in that moment. I’ve gone back and forth a lot on whether to bring her back, but a soft ‘reboot’ on her character seemed to be the ticket.
