– Hoping to end their secret business arrangement, Sonja went to visit Loretta Ragan in jail — unaware that Natalie was actually the one paying her and simply using Loretta’s name as a cover. Loretta played along, determined to figure out what was going on, and later phoned Sonja with a warning to take orders only from her personally.
The sun is shining through the window as Sonja Kahele adds some sweetener to her iced tea at the condiment station inside Thaw Coffee & Tea. She doesn’t often treat herself to drinks like this — it seems like a waste of money when she could make something at home — but she has been busy running errands today, and she has plenty to celebrate. She recently moved into a cozy new apartment, her relationship with Tim Fisher is taking off, her mother’s health has stabilized, and her business arrangement with Loretta Ragan appears to be coming to an end.
In retrospect, she hardly understands why she accepted the strange offer from Mrs. Ragan when it came by phone all those months ago. She was desperate for money to pay for her mother’s care, and the prospect of regular bonuses was too appealing to pass up. She even made sure, repeatedly, that her extra assignment wouldn’t involve hurting anyone. What she did to Spencer Ragan — making sure that he used a specific white noise app that would feed him subliminal messages to keep his memory from returning — has always made her feel uneasy, especially as she got to know Spencer and his family more. It has even seemed as though being without his memory of that time has helped Spencer get closer to his relatives, but the guilt of doing that to him has weighed heavily on Sonja. And she never expected to fall for Spencer’s father at all.
With a sigh, she steps out of the coffee shop and into the warm, soothing sunlight. She takes a sip of her iced tea and starts toward her car, only to stop in her tracks when she hears her phone ringing inside her purse. The thought pools inside her head before she is even aware of it: it must be Loretta, delivering her next decree. Sonja has been hoping against hope that the woman will simply let her off the hook and let this be over for good, and she scrambles to answer the call.
But instead of a call from the New Hampshire prison where Loretta currently resides, it is another familiar number. She hesitates, recalling Loretta’s warning that the person who had been acting as their go-between was fired and Sonja is no longer to take orders from her, and then she decides that there is no harm in answering. Just to be sure.
“Hello?” she says as she holds the phone to her ear.
“Sonja,” the female voice, which is always a little stilted and husky, says. “I’m almost surprised that you picked up. Have you been avoiding me?”
“Ummm…”
“We had a deal, Ms. Kahele. Or are you not enjoying those checks anymore?”
“But Mrs. Ragan…”
“What about Mrs. Ragan?”
Sonja stiffens and casts nervous looks in several directions to be sure that no one is around to overhear her. A few patrons of the skating rink are heading inside that entrance, but they are too far away to hear anything she is saying.
“She told me she fired you,” Sonja says, her voice beginning to tremble. “That I shouldn’t listen to you or take any more instructions from you.”
“She what? When?”
“I—” Sonja’s head feels like a murky lagoon, with water swirling all around so that she can’t make out anything in front of her. “That’s what she said. And I ultimately have to listen to her. I’m sorry.”
“You can’t—”
“I’m sorry,” Sonja says again, and she holds her breath as she stabs the red button to end the call. She takes another drink of her iced tea as she attempts to gather herself, fearing that she has just angered someone who won’t take it lying down. Who knows what this person did to get on Loretta Ragan’s bad side?
From the parked car across the lot, the figure watches Sonja carefully, knowing that there is nothing left to do but make a move.

The campus of King’s Bay Academy is alive with excitement and possibility. Students cluster on the lawns and the walkways beneath the big, bright sky, the electricity of the last day of school for the year buzzing noisily in the air.
In one of the outdoor locker bays, Caleb Taylor finishes loading the last of the items from his locker into his backpack. He grimaces as he tosses a cup that once contained iced coffee into a nearby trashcan.
“Shit!”
He turns instinctively at the voice to see a dark-haired girl in a black leather jacket standing in front of an open locker. In her hand is a paper bag with its bottom torn loose, and at her feet are several binders and a bunch of scattered pens and markers. Realizing that they are the only two in the locker bay, Caleb sets his backpack in his locker and moves toward her.
“Need some help?”
The girl, midway through bending down to pick up the mess, looks toward him.
“No, ugh. I guess not.”
She begins to scoop up the writing utensils. Caleb goes back to his locker, grabs something, and holds it out to her.
“Need this, then?”
Surprised, she glances up and sees him holding out a wadded-up plastic bag.
“Had this in my locker and I was gonna throw it out,” he says.
“Oh. Yeah. Thanks.”
She takes the bag and begins stuffing items into it.
“Jasmine, right?” he asks, feeling awkward about just walking away but also not sure how to help, since she seems to have the situation under control.
“Yeah, that’s me.”
“I’m–”
“Caleb Taylor. Believe me, I know.”
“Really?”
She rolls her eyes as she sticks one of the binders into the bag. “You’re a jock. You were on Homecoming Court. Plus your family’s been in the news a lot.”
“Oh yeah,” Caleb says. “That. I promise they’re nicer than the news probably makes it sound.”
“Nice is underrated,” Jasmine says with a smirk. “You know, you don’t have to stand there and watch me.”
“I’d help, but–”
“No, I mean, I’ve got it. You gave me the bag. I’m sure you have some big end-of-the-year party to get to or something, with all the popular kids.”
“Oh, uh… maybe. I have a couple of things up in the air. Not sure what I’m gonna do. How about you?”
With the filled bag in hand, she stands up. “I’m going to this DJ show on the north side. Kind of an underground thing.”
“That sounds cool.”
“Yeah.” Her lips part, but she hesitates for a moment before speaking. Caleb finds himself noticing the way that the tip of her tongue traces her upper lip. “You’re welcome to come, if you want.”
“Really?”
“Totally. I mean, I’m sure you have better things to do, but if you wind up feeling like it…”
“Could be fun,” Caleb says as he pulls out his phone. “Here, put your number in here. I’ll text you later.”
Her brown eyes seem to light up before she takes the phone. She quickly types in the entry.
“There,” she says as she hands it back. “No pressure, but… hit me up if you want later.”
“Cool. Yeah. Thanks.”
“And thanks for the bag. You’re a life-saver. Later, Caleb.”
“Later.”
She pushes her locker door closed and then exits the locker bay. Caleb looks down at his phone, where the new contact is still displayed on the screen, and already knows what he is going to do.

“Thanks for making time to see me,” Sarah Fisher Gray says as Matt Gray lets her into his brother and sister-in-law’s house.
“Yeah, of course,” Matt says, his eyes lingering over her for a moment before he closes and locks the door. “What’s up? It sounded important.”
“It is.” Sarah sets down her purse on the credenza in the entryway and peers into the nearby dining room. “Wow. It looks great in here. Mia’s done a lot of work.”
“Yeah. They’re really making it a home.”
“I haven’t seen them in forever. I’m sorry to miss them.”
“Mia wanted to surprise Jake and Marcus at the school, since it’s the last day of the year,” Matt explains before planting his hands on his hips. “So what’s this about?”
His impatience stings Sarah. Even a moment ago, when she entered, he seemed pleased to see her, and things almost felt normal again. It’s still strange for her to be around him and feel this unfamiliar distance. All she wants to do is rush toward him and throw her arms around him — or that would be all, if not for what she has to tell him.
She reaches into her pocket and pulls out the folded check.
“What’s that?” Matt asks.
Sarah unfolds it and holds it out for him to see.
“Zane paid you back?”
“Most of what he blackmailed me into giving him, yeah,” she says. “He even promised to give me the rest that he already spent.”
Matt’s eyes scan the cashier’s check. “So what’s the catch?”
“Nothing. Yet.” She lets out a heavy sigh. “You know what he’s doing, though.”
“Trying to get back on Tori’s good side.”
“Bingo. And you know what’s the worst part?”
Matt is already nodding. “That it might work.”
“She’s just been so hurt. I think she’s convinced herself that if they can get back to how they were, then all the pain goes away.”
“So what do we do?” he wonders, folding his arms.
Sarah finds herself staring at his strong, muscled forearms before she can produce a response.
“I mean, I’m going to tell her,” she says. “I have to. I’m sure Zane is going to let her know, too.”
“We can’t let her go back to him,” Matt says. “He’s a crook.”
“That’s what I’m saying.”
“Thanks for filling me in,” Matt says. “Why don’t we… you know… sit down with her together and tell her?”
“I think that’s a great idea. Present a united front.”
“Right.”
Their eyes lock in a moment of silent understanding. Again, Sarah almost manages to forget about their separation. Almost.
“I’ll call her and see when she can meet us,” he says, his voice suddenly taking on a weird air of formality. “I’ll let you know.”
“Oh. Okay. Cool.”
He crosses back to the door and unlocks it. Startled, Sarah reaches for her purse.
“Let me know as soon as you hear back from her,” Sarah says. “I’m available whenever.”
“Sounds good.”
With one final look at him, Sarah leaves the house. She listens to the sound of the door locking behind her, wishing that he had invited her to stay, or that he’d have said he was coming home with her.
Inside the house, Matt leans against the door. Molly’s words from the other night reverberate inside his head:
“It sounds like what you want is to be married to a woman who’s going to do everything in her power to fight for her family. And if you ask me, you already are. Just think about it that way, okay?”
He lets out a sigh, still completely uncertain what to do about his marriage.

Sonja is halfway to her car, her mind still racing, when she hears her name being called out.
“Sonja!”
It takes her a few seconds to connect with reality and find the source of the voice.
“I thought that was you,” Natalie Bishop says, smiling broadly as she hurries across the lot.
“Natalie. Hi,” Sonja says, trying her best to regain her composure. “How are you?”
“Oh, just grabbing an iced coffee. I’m in the middle of last-minute wedding errands.”
Sonja grins back at her. “You must be so excited. I know Tim is thrilled for his brother.”
“Good. It’s going to be a great day. You’re coming with Tim, aren’t you?”
“Yeah, I’ll be there.”
“Oh, that’s so great.” Natalie folds her hands together. “What are you up to today?”
“Just… errands,” Sonja replies stiffly.
Natalie studies her for any hint as to what in the world is going on. She has spent the better part of her day tailing Sonja, waiting for an opportunity to stage a “coincidental” run-in so that she might gain some idea of why the nurse stopped taking her calls. The assertion that Loretta Ragan had something to do with it made Natalie’s blood run cold; the actual Loretta was never any part of her plan. She was simply using the name so that Sonja wouldn’t ever know who was actually paying her to impede Spencer’s memory from returning. But if Sonja somehow made contact with Loretta…
“You just moved, didn’t you?” Natalie asks, careful to keep her voice cheerful and perky, a far cry from the serious, deeper tone she always uses when making the calls as Sonja’s secret boss. She hopes the difference is enough to prevent Sonja from making the connection. “I know how expensive that can get.”
“You’re telling me.” Sonja sips her iced tea through the straw.
“Are you okay?”
Sonja looks up sharply. “What? Why would you ask that?”
“You seem a little jittery,” Natalie says. “If something’s going on, you can tell me, Sonja. I’m about to marry your boyfriend’s brother, so that… means we can be friends, right?”
“I guess it does,” Sonja says, letting her shoulders relax ever-so-slightly.
“Good. Then why don’t you unburden yourself? Tell me what’s got you so upset.”

Out on the quad, Caleb locates his twin brother and Bree Halston chatting. He hurries over the grass toward them.
“There you are,” Christian says. “Ready to go?”
“Um, yeah,” Caleb says. “But I need to ask you guys a favor.”
Bree narrows her eyes suspiciously. “What kind of favor?”
“I need you to back me up and tell Mom and Conrad that there’s a soccer team thing tonight, and that I’m going to it.”
“I’m guessing there isn’t actually a soccer team thing?” Christian questions.
Caleb shakes his head. “No, but there’s this party I wanna go to–”
“Why didn’t you just tell us that there was a soccer team thing?” Bree asks.
“Because–” Caleb stops mid-thought. “I don’t know.”
Christian and Bree grin at one another and then burst out into laughter.
“Listen, can you guys just back me up? Please?” Caleb barks.
“What are you actually going to?” Christian asks.
“Just a party.”
Bree swings her long, blonde hair over her shoulder. “Are we invited?”
“I mean… sure? That girl Jasmine just invited me.”
“Jasmine with the dark hair? Always wears a leather jacket even when it’s a thousand degrees out?” Bree asks.
“She was in my Bio class,” Christian says. “She seems kind of like bad news.”
Caleb lets out a groan. “Bad news? How? Because she wears a leather jacket?”
Christian and Bree both shrug.
“She invited me to a party, not to join a cult,” Caleb says. “Will you guys please, please just cover for me if you don’t want to come?”
“Yeah, I don’t care,” Christian says. “Just don’t get in trouble and then get us in trouble.”
“I promise. Thank you guys!” Caleb exclaims as his expression brightens. “Now let’s get out of here and not think about this place until fall, okay?”

Natalie tries to act only moderately interested in Sonja’s troubles as she waits for a response, even though there is nothing in the universe more pressing to her at the moment. Whatever Sonja has done to foul up her plans could ruin everything. She hates that this whole thing has spiraled out of control so badly.
“It’s nothing,” Sonja says after a long, tortured pause. “Just some bad news from back home.”
“I’m sorry to hear that,” Natalie says, careful to conceal her annoyance.
“Thanks, Natalie. I’m sorry to rush out on you, but I have to get going.”
“Of course. Go ahead. I’ll be seeing you soon, Sonja.”
“Yes! Good luck with all the wedding stuff,” Sonja says before she begins moving back toward her car.
As much as Natalie wants to continue watching her, she forces herself to go inside Thaw and order a drink. Still, she turns back over her shoulder to watch out the window as Sonja gets into her car.
What has that simpleton done? she wonders. And what the hell does Loretta Ragan know? Natalie reminds herself that she has left absolutely no trail. Everything has been conducted using burner phones, cash and money orders under an alias, and nothing that could physically connect her to Sonja or Spencer’s care. Still, she observes nervously as Sonja drives out of the parking lot.
Neither of the women has any sense of the man sitting in another car at the edge of the lot, having watched their entire interaction.

Shit, Natalie caught on to Sonja. I wonder if she will actually realize that Sonja reached out to Loretta. With this mysterious man watching them now, I have a feeling this will end in disaster. Loretta is not someone to be messed with, even from behind bars, especially when Spencer is involved.
It’s nice to see the twins getting some air time now that they’ve been aged. I have a feeling this Jasmine gal and the party will end up going wrong. Otherwise, where would the fun be?
I can’t wait for the climax of the Natalie/Jason/Sonja storyline … you’re building it up for something epic!

Sonja/Natalie : Natalie’s plan isn’t full proof anymore. I think possibly that the truth will be revealed during her wedding to Jason. Sonja in a way reminds me of Sabrina , both outsiders , however Sonja seems more confident and actually is willing to do whatever she can in order to get what she wants. I wonder who is following the ladies? And is he hired by Loretta? Heck it could be someone totally different. Maybe Zane or even Spencer lol. Anyway I feel like the denouement is about to occur with this story sooner than later.
Sarah/Matt : 18 years later and these two our still both stubborn when it comes to admitting their true feeling for one another. At first it was written as if Sarah was the only one still longing for her husband. Yet when she left Matt reflected on what Molly told him about giving her another chance. Hopefully, with the problems going on with their daughter. The two of them will come together like they always have and possibly reconcile and maybe it’ll lead to a good love scene. These two probably hadn’t any intimacy since Matt left the Fisher home. LOL
Caleb/Jasmine/Christian/Bree: So far I’m liking how you’re building the new teen scene on the series. Caleb is the jock , Christian the responsible one , Jasmine the rebel , Bree the skating princess, and hopefully we’ll get more with Marcus down the road.
