As excited as we are to celebrate 20 years of Footprints, we’re well aware that two decades of story and nearly 900 episodes might be daunting to readers who are new to the series or who have been away for a while. Sure, we have yearly recaps (in addition to all past episodes) available in the Episodes section, but if you’re looking for a primer on the basics of what’s gone on over the past 20 years, look no further…

1. Bill and Paula Fisher raised four children — Tim, Molly, Sarah, and Jason — but Paula had given up a son for adoption prior to marrying Bill.
2. Tim and his wife, nurse Claire Robbins, had to travel to South America to rescue their newborn son after Claire’s mobster father, James, kidnapped the boy.
3. Tim’s boss, Diane Bishop, tricked him into sleeping with her and conceived a daughter, but Tim and Claire won custody of Samantha.
4. Sarah was jealous when her boyfriend, fellow cop Brent Taylor, bonded with her sister, Molly, and talked Brent into eloping.
5. Sarah’s obsession with keeping Brent and Molly apart caused her to crack, which led to an affair with Matt Gray and the end of her marriage to Brent.
6. Sarah and Matt grew closer while co-parenting their daughter, Victoria, and eventually married… twice.
7. While attempting to help Claire prove that her ex, Ryan Moriani, and his father, Nick, were involved in criminal activity, Tim disappeared and was presumed dead.
8. When Jason’s figure skating partner, Courtney, was injured, he began skating with unhinged Shannon Parish, who had Courtney attacked to keep her off the ice longer.
9. Jason and Courtney fell in love and, despite splitting up for a time, eventually had a daughter and got back together.
10. Courtney set up her best friend, Lauren Brooks, with new arrival Alex Marshall, but Alex came out of the closet and fell for Trevor… who happened to be Lauren’s brother.
11. Shannon returned with a new face and identity — “Sabrina Gage” — but when she failed to win Jason over, she did the sensible thing and murdered Courtney on her wedding night.
12. Tim returned from the dead, only to find that Claire had moved on with Ryan, who had been discovered to be the child Paula gave up for adoption.
13. Ryan framed Tim for shooting Nick Moriani to death, but on Ryan and Claire’s wedding day, Nick showed up alive and exposed Ryan, who became a pariah.
14. Brent and Molly’s marriage fell apart after he became obsessed with finding out who’d helped Nick engineer the explosion that cost Brent his leg, and Brent eventually moved on with Claire.
15. Molly found love again with photographer Philip Ragan, but he turned out to be the Footprint Killer — a serial killer who murdered her father, Bill, half-brother, Ryan, and several others in King’s Bay.
16. After Paula shot Philip dead and blocked it out, Molly took the fall and stood trial — only for Paula to regain her memory and be sentenced to a year of house arrest.
17. Tim and Claire discovered that the boy they’d raised, Travis, was not their biological son, and that their actual child, Spencer, had been raised by James’s widow, Loretta Ragan.
18. Brent’s sister, musician Danielle, fell in love with Ryan, whom she married on his deathbed, and relapsed into alcoholism after his death, though she finally got clean.
19. Danielle’s goddaughter, Elly, turned out to be her biological child, and became Travis Fisher’s teenage sweetheart.
20. Claire took in a foster daughter, Tempest Banks, who began a romantic relationship with Tim and Diane’s daughter, Samantha.
